Es hora de la justicia en Guatemala y debemos tomar medidas ahora. El conflicto armado interno de Guatemala terminó hace más de una década con una cantidad enorme de personas desaparecidas, asesinadas, violadas y torturadas. A pesar de los esfuerzos continuos en muchos frentes, y las promesas por el gobierno, la justicia aún no se ha entregado y las promesas siguen sin cumplirse. El genocidio dejó cientos de miles de muertos, la mayoría siendo de poblaciones indígenas que ya eran víctimas de discriminación y vulnerabilidad extrema. Archivos militares de Guatemala, que contienen información crucial en relación con las atrocidades que tuvieron lugar entre 1960 y 1996, fueron descubiertas en 2005 por los miembros de la oficina de Derechos Humanos de la Nación y sólo recientemente han comenzado a ser puestos a disposición del público.

Según el diario The Washington Post, estos archivos se han escondido en un almacén por la policía nacional y sus protectores, y por casualidad se descubrió en 2005. La información amplia que puede ser revelado a partir del estimado 80 millones de documentos que han llenado éste depósito desde hace décadas, recogiendo polvo y moho, y que han dejado innumerables familias devastadas y sin ninguna pizca de cierre de la desaparición de los seres queridos, por fin puede salir a la luz … en teoría.

On Saturday, The Washington Post published an article highlighting the opening of Guatemala’s police archives. The archives — which contain documentation of Guatemala’s internal armed conflict that killed approximately 200,000 people – could provide long awaited justice to families who never got answers about disappearances and murders of their loved ones.

The article continues with a comment from Amnesty International: “I don’t think anyone truly believed this day would come,” said Barbara Bocek, the Guatemala country specialist for Amnesty International USA. “It’s an incredible achievement, especially for Guatemala. In other countries these records would be buried underground, shredded, destroyed.”

However, AI has expressed concern about intimidation of the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office, the agency credited with discovering the warehouse of documents: “The wife of the Director of the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office was kidnapped on Wednesday and tortured. One official was beaten up, whilst a number of threats have been made against other officials of the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office. These include a bomb threat and a threat against the life of the Director of the Office. ”
